Tech Review: Google Chrome

September 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well after a week of using Google’s new Chrome web browser, I can say that I’ve been officially sold. I was confident after the first day or two that nothing was going to switch me from Firefox but something happened over the weekend. I found myself getting more comfortable with Chrome and its usability.

It’s like a new toy and now I’m beginning to think that every couple of years it’s good to switch to a new web browser. First it was from Explorer to Firefox and now from Firefox to Chrome. By switching to Chrome you’re not really sacrificing anything. It’s not really as fast as Firefox 3 but it’s not so much slower that you’ll be missing anything.

I like the frequently visited sites screen that comes up every time you open a new tab, which shows a small screen shot of the 6 most visited sites you go to. I’ve gotten used to that as opposed to the normal drop down menu at the address bar.

I also like how each tab is positioned all the way at the top of screen. It gives you less to look at which means less distraction from the actual browser and lets the web page be the star.

Another feature which seems to be the most interesting by its inclusion is Sleuth mode. This feature allows you to view web pages but leaves no trace on your computer that you ever visited them. I’m not sure how this works in terms of computer forensics like say for if instance the FBI seizes your computer I’m sure they’d be able to find any data they’d be looking for. But lets say you’re searching for gifts for your wife and you don’t want her to know you’ve been visiting certain sites and erasing your web history would make her suspicious, here’s where Sleuth mode comes in. I’m trying to sell this feature in a practical way but, I’m sure people will get their ideas.

Anyway, i like this browser and it seems like the one I’ll be using for the near future. If you haven’t checked it out click here and give it a run.
